About Free-Loan Teaching Resources
The National Gallery of Art's Division of Education provides slide
teaching programs, multimedia programs, videocassettes, CD ROMs, and
DVDs to millions of viewers each year. These programs are intended to
foster awareness of the visual arts and make Gallery collections
accessible to a broad audience beyond the Gallery's walls. They are
circulated free of charge to educational institutions, community
groups, and individuals throughout the United States.
Our Loan Programs meet national standards in the visual arts for
kindergarten through grade 12. A variety of artists, subjects,
techniques, and styles are examined. Many programs contain suggestions
for related activities and questions designed to stimulate discussion
of the art and artists, of cultural and historical issues.
Slide teaching programs are designed to permit flexibility in use. We
encourage you to review them, select those images and information that
are most useful to your teaching needs, and to adapt and shape the
materials to your specific instructional objectives.

El Dia De Los Muertos and Meditate and Create
El Dia De Los Muertos
Remembering Dr. Suess
Presented by
Dos Amigas, Artsy Mamas and Boro Book Warehouse
What: El Día de los Muertos is a way to honor and remember people that have passed away. It is a holiday specifically set aside to reminisce about the person's life, and in many ways, to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions.
Why: To expand cultural horizons and to have fun!
Who: Families and Children of all ages
When: Monday, October 26, 10am-12pm
How: The holiday is celebrated, like holidays everywhere, with family, friends, and food. Families visit cemeteries of their relatives, decorate their tombstones (much like we do on Memorial Day), prepare the deceased's favorite food, and console one another by telling tales of the person's life. If the family lives far away from the cemetery in which their loved one is buried, an ofrenda, or offering can be set up in the home. Ofrendas often include the person's favorite flowers and marigolds which are thought to attract the spirits of the dead. Ofrendas may also have sweet bread called Pan de Muerto, pictures of the deceased, candles, favorite clothing or articles of the deceased, and anything the family wants to include in the ofrenda. These ofrendas range from the extremely elaborate to the very basic and are simply a way to remember the person.
How much: $2 per family
What else: Join the Dos Amigas and Artsy Mamas as we construct an ofrenda to Dr. Suess, eat Pan de Muerto, decorate Caleveras de Azucar, and make Papel Picado.
Is it Halloween? Is it evil???
El dia de los Muertos is a reverent holiday that is peaceful and respectful. El Día de los Muertos is typically celebrated in Mexico, and now, in this country. In general, the Mexican people view death both respectfully and temporary instead of something evil or unholy. Contrary to popular American belief, this is not in any way a scary holiday, nor is it related to Halloween, though the two holidays are close to one another in date.

Where: Center for the Arts in Murfreesboro

Why: Because November is the month of Thanksgiving and we feel it is important to focus on the wonderful gifts we have been given as artists, as mothers, and as beautiful women.

Know Tibet: A Benefit Concert for Tibetan Refugee Children
From Knowledge to Compassion, from Compassion to Action.
On Sunday, June 1st at Father Ryan High School Theater, Blue Moves Modern Dance Company, Global Education Center and One Human Race 4 Justice will offer a performance to inform, entertain and inspire adults and children alike about Tibetan culture and society. The event will feature music, dance, speakers and educational and interactive exhibits. Singer/songwriter and former resident of Nepal and Thailand, Shanna Underwood, will share songs of peace. Drummer, percussionist and songwriter Kirby Shelstad will perform and share some information about Tibetan Buddhism, and Blue Moves will perform “Breaking the Bones: A Plea for Tibet,” a modern dance and audio documentary telling the story of the crushing oppression suffered by Tibetans under the hands of the Chinese government. The show will also feature speakers such as Tibetan exile Ngawang Losel sharing his personal story of crossing the Himalayas on foot into exile as a teenager, and the many years he spent isolated from his family in a Tibetan Refugee School in India.
Learning about other cultures through the arts is a step towards cultivating compassion and respect for diverse societies. This event is designed to offer children and adults a window of understanding into Tibetan culture and the current situation in Tibet and China.
Proceeds will benefit Tibetan Children’s Villages and Losel’s Project Giving Justice, both of which support children at Tibetan Refugee Schools in India. In the lobby will be educational exhibits about Tibet and action tables sharing ways that adults and children alike can help be a part of the solution. More Than Warmth -- Stitching Quilts, Creating Compassion -- will have an exhibit in which participants can create drawings and visual messages of friendship and caring on quilts to be sent to Tibetan children.
Lobby exhibits open at 1 p.m., performance begins at 2 p.m. Suggested donation is $10 adults, $5 children or $20 for a family. Father Ryan is located at 700 Norwood Dr., Nashville.

Awesome Article in the Pulse!
Valerie Nutt 01.MAY.08
All hail the play date, supposed respite of mommies everywhere. Unfortunately for some, these can turn into glorified joint babysitting sessions in the houses of people they dont have anything in common with anymore. Help is on the way. Local mother-centric activities have received a major facelift.
Now moms can spend the afternoon learning how to paint, act, draw, scrapbook, or even helping other mothers in the area, thanks to Artsy Mamasbrainchild of unique local mama, Mandy Ray-Jones.
I had been involved with moms groups in the past and found myself dissatisfied, Ray-Jones said. Id found myself lost in all of the mundane tasks of taking care of a kid for so long, Id started to lose sight of myself.
About a year ago, the red-headed, spitfire actress and writer caught herself wearing khakis on a regular basis. Something, she knew, had to be done.
So with her son, Hunter, on one hip and her daughter, Ronin, on another, Ray-Jones went in search of people who felt the same. She was sure they were out there, and she was right.
Artsy Mamas was born in 2007, and now not only is Ray-Jones getting to live with art in her life, shes picking up new skills and learning how to use her gifts, and the gifts of her fellow Artsy Mamas, to inspire more mothers.
This is a great time to be a mom, Ray-Jones said. We are no longer going to allow ourselves to taking the back seat. Moms are hot, we are talented, we are smart, and we are artists.
The ladies of Artsy Mamas are already working with Bellwood Preschools parenting center to encourage other local mothers, and with A Time to Dance, Center for the Arts, and retailers like Hobby Lobby to provide community services. Other programs in the works are with the YWCA domestic violence program, local pregnancy support system, local homeless shelters, anywhere, Ray-Jones said, with moms who may need an extra boost of self confidence.
Artsy Mamas has been meeting regularly in peoples homes for a year, but now the organization has become a bonafide nonprofit organization and is organizing events in public places to encourage more participation.
We hope to start having regular artshops in our community, Ray-Jones said. We are searching for volunteers to lead artshops in painting, mosaic, jewelry making, pottery, scrap booking, sewing, music, dance, etc.
The founder plans to delegate her local concerns to a capable board of directors, freeing her up to help communities across the country form their own Artsy Mamas chapters.
This May, the month of Mothers Day, Artsy Mamas are bringing Mamapalooza to Murfreesboro.
I believe that programs like ours are vital for the community. It is through events like Mamapalooza and programming like Artsy Mamas that mothers gain a voice, Ray-Jones said.
Mamapalooza, hosted by The Motherhood Foundation, was an easy fit for Murfreesboros Artsy Mamas. Ray-Jones calls the similarities between the initiatives almost creepy.
Mamapalooza Murfreesboro happens Sunday, May 18, at Conrads, in the Holiday Inn on Old Fort Parkway. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Cornerstone Cheesecake and Gifts, Center for the Arts and Johnny Guitars.
Entertainment includes music from Carolyn Sledge and Sugar Lime Blue, interactive dance, monologues, vendors, door prizes, a silent auction and a Mama of the Year award.
